2011 Volvo XC90 code P043000 Catalyst System Efficiency
This 2011 Volvo XC90 came to us after the dealer recommended replacing the catalytic converters because the check engine light was on and code P043000 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2) General Failure code was found.
It has been our experience that quite often this code is set because of faiing oxygen/air fuel ratio sensors. Unfortunately there is no way to test these sensors or the converters for general performance failures.
Our recommendation is to replace the sensors first and then monitor. If the code comes back, then you can be sure the converter has failed. We always recommend new sensors when a converter is replace, so there is no harm in trying them first, they can be moved to the new converter(s) easily if the converter(s) end up needing replaced. About 70% of the time, sensors alone correct the issue.
